أَسْمِعْ بِهِمْ وَأَبْصِرْ يَوْمَ يَأْتُونَنَا ۖ لَٰكِنِ ٱلظَّٰلِمُونَ ٱلْيَوْمَ فِى ضَلَٰلٍۢ مُّبِينٍۢ

Introduction

This is āyah 38 of Sūrat Maryam (Mary), the 44th sūrah in the traditional order of revelation. It was revealed in the Meccan period and sits within Juzʾ 16. Meccan verses tend to address faith, the oneness of God, and the hereafter.

How clearly will they see and hear, the Day when they will appear before Us! But the wrongdoers today are in plain error (38)And warn them of the Day of grief and regrets, when the case has been decided, while (now) they are in a state of carelessness, and they believe not (39)Verily, We will inherit the earth and whatsoever is thereon. And to Us they all shall be returned (40) The Disbeliever's warning of the Day of Distress Allah, the Exalted, says informing about the disbelievers on the Day of Resurrection that they will be made to have the clearest hearing and sight. This is as Allah says, وَلَوْ تَرَىٰ إِذِ الْمُجْرِمُونَ نَاكِسُو رُءُوسِهِمْ عِندَ رَبِّهِمْ رَبَّنَا أَبْصَرْنَا وَسَمِعْنَا (And if you only could see when the criminals hang their heads before their Lord (saying): "Our Lord!
