Introduction

This is āyah 46 of Sūrat Al-Qalam (The Pen), the 2nd sūrah in the traditional order of revelation. It was revealed in the Meccan period and sits within Juzʾ 29. Meccan verses tend to address faith, the oneness of God, and the hereafter.

The Day when the Shin shall be laid bare and they shall be called to prostrate themselves, but they shall not be able to do so (42)Their eyes will be cast down and ignominy will cover them; they used to be called to prostrate themselves, while they were (43)Then leave Me alone with whoever denies this narration.
