Introduction

This is āyah 21 of Sūrat Al-Qalam (The Pen), the 2nd sūrah in the traditional order of revelation. It was revealed in the Meccan period and sits within Juzʾ 29. Meccan verses tend to address faith, the oneness of God, and the hereafter.

Verily, We have tried them as We tried the People of the Garden, when they swore to pluck the fruits in the morning (17)Without (saying: "If Allah wills." (18)Then there passed over it a Ta'if from your Lord while they were asleep (19)So by the morning, it became like As-Sarim (20)Then they called out (one to another as soon) as the morning broke (21)Saying: "Go to your tilth in the morning, if you would pluck (the fruits).
