سُورَةُ الشُّورَىٰ · 42:42

إِنَّمَا ٱلسَّبِيلُ عَلَى ٱلَّذِينَ يَظْلِمُونَ ٱلنَّاسَ وَيَبْغُونَ فِى ٱلْأَرْضِ بِغَيْرِ ٱلْحَقِّ ۚ أُو۟لَٰٓئِكَ لَهُمْ عَذَابٌ أَلِيمٌۭ

The cause is only against the ones who wrong the people and tyrannize upon the earth without right. Those will have a painful punishment.

Introduction

This is āyah 42 of Sūrat Ash-Shura (The Consultation), the 62nd sūrah in the traditional order of revelation. It was revealed in the Meccan period and sits within Juzʾ 25. Meccan verses tend to address faith, the oneness of God, and the hereafter.

Hafiz Ibn Kathir

The recompense for an evil is an evil like thereof; but whoever forgives and makes reconciliation, his reward is with Allah. Verily, He likes not the wrongdoers (40)And indeed whosoever takes revenge after he has suffered wrong, for such there is no way (of blame) against them (41)The way is only against those who oppress men and rebel in the earth without justification; for such there will be a painful torment (42)And verily, whosoever shows patience and forgives, that would truly be from the things recommended by Allah (43) Forgiving or exacting Revenge on Wrongdoers وَجَزَاءُ سَيِّئَةٍ سَيِّئَةٌ مِثْلُهَا ۖ (The recompense for an evil is an evil like thereof).
