سُورَةُ الزُّمَرِ · 39:42

ٱللَّهُ يَتَوَفَّى ٱلْأَنفُسَ حِينَ مَوْتِهَا وَٱلَّتِى لَمْ تَمُتْ فِى مَنَامِهَا ۖ فَيُمْسِكُ ٱلَّتِى قَضَىٰ عَلَيْهَا ٱلْمَوْتَ وَيُرْسِلُ ٱلْأُخْرَىٰٓ إِلَىٰٓ أَجَلٍۢ مُّسَمًّى ۚ إِنَّ فِى ذَٰلِكَ لَءَايَٰتٍۢ لِّقَوْمٍۢ يَتَفَكَّرُونَ

Saheeh International · EN

Allah takes the souls at the time of their death, and those that do not die [He takes] during their sleep. Then He keeps those for which He has decreed death and releases the others for a specified term. Indeed in that are signs for a people who give thought.

Bio

Introduction

This is āyah 42 of Sūrat Az-Zumar (The Troops), the 59th sūrah in the traditional order of revelation. It was revealed in the Meccan period and sits within Juzʾ 24. Meccan verses tend to address faith, the oneness of God, and the hereafter.

Hafiz Ibn Kathir

Verily, We have sent down to you the Book for mankind in truth. So, whosoever accepts the guidance, it is only for himself; and whosoever goes astray, he goes astray only to his (own) loss. And you are not a trustee over them (41)It is Allah Who takes away the souls at the time of their death, and those that die not during their sleep. He keeps those (souls) for which He has ordained death and sends the rest for a term appointed. Verily, in this are signs for a people who think deeply (42) Allah says, addressing His Messenger Muhammad ﷺ: إِنَّا أَنْزَلْنَا عَلَيْكَ الْكِتَابَ (Verily, We have sent down to you the Book) meaning, the Qur'an. لِلنَّاسِ بِالْحَقِّ (for mankind in truth.) means, for all of creation, mankind and Jinn, so that he may warn them therewith. فَمَنِ اهْتَدَىٰ فَلِنَفْسِهِ ۖ (So, whosoever accepts the guidance, it is only for himself;) means, the benefit of th…
