A faction of the people of the Scripture wish they could mislead you. But they do not mislead except themselves, and they perceive [it] not.

Introduction

This is āyah 69 of Sūrat Aal-i-Imraan (Family of Imran), the 89th sūrah in the traditional order of revelation. It was revealed in the Medinan period and sits within Juzʾ 3. Medinan verses often address community life, law, and the building of society.

(A party of the People of the Scripture long to make you go astray�) [3:69]. This was revealed about Mu�adh ibn Jabal and Hudhayfah [ibn al-Yaman] and �Ammar ibn Yasir when the Jews called them to embrace their religion. This story has already been mentioned in Surah the Cow.

A party of the People of the Scripture wish to lead you astray. But they shall not lead astray anyone except themselves, and they perceive not (69)"O People of the Scripture! Why do you disbelieve in the Ayat of Allah, while you bear witness. (70)"O People of the Scripture! Why do you mix truth with falsehood and conceal the truth while you know? (71)And a party of the People of the Scripture say: "Believe in the morning in that which is revealed to the believers, and reject it at the end of the day, so that they may turn back (72)And believe no one except the one who follows your religion."
