Introduction

This is āyah 42 of Sūrat Ash-Shu'araa (The Poets), the 47th sūrah in the traditional order of revelation. It was revealed in the Meccan period and sits within Juzʾ 19. Meccan verses tend to address faith, the oneness of God, and the hereafter.

So, the sorcerers were assembled at a fixed time on a day appointed (38)And it was said to the people: "Are you (too) going to assemble? (39)"That we may follow the sorcerers if they are the winners. (40)So, when the sorcerers arrived, they said to Fir'awn: "Will there surely be a reward for us if we are the winners? (41)He said: "Yes, and you shall then verily be of those brought near (to myself). (42)Musa said to them: "Throw what you are going to throw! (43)So, they threw their ropes and their sticks, and said: "By the might of Fir'awn, it is we who will certainly win!
