Introduction

This is āyah 36 of Sūrat Al-Hijr (The Rocky Tract), the 54th sūrah in the traditional order of revelation. It was revealed in the Meccan period and sits within Juzʾ 14. Meccan verses tend to address faith, the oneness of God, and the hereafter.

(Allah) said: "Then leave, for verily, you are an outcast. (34)"And verily, the curse shall be upon you until the Day of Recompense. (35)[Iblis] said: "O my Lord! Then give me respite until the Day they (the dead) will be resurrected. (36)Allah said: "Then verily, you are of those reprieved, (37)"Until the Day of the time appointed. (38) The Expulsion of Iblis from Jannah, and His Reprieve until the Day of Resurrection Allah tells us how He issued an unconditional command to Iblis to leave the position he held among the highest of heights.
