Introduction

This is āyah 20 of Sūrat Al-Hijr (The Rocky Tract), the 54th sūrah in the traditional order of revelation. It was revealed in the Meccan period and sits within Juzʾ 14. Meccan verses tend to address faith, the oneness of God, and the hereafter.

This introduction is a starting point — the community and Bilal will enrich it over time.

And therein We placed for you livelihoods. The cause of each person's livelihood is different. The livelihood of the desirers is the auspicious- ness of turning toward Him, the livelihood of the recognizers is the gentleness of His beauty, and the livelihood of the tawḤīd-voicers is the unveiling of His majesty. Each is connected to his own state, and each has a portion of His bounteousness. But the Real is incomparable with beautifying Himself through His acts.

And indeed, We have put the big stars in the heaven and We beautified it for the beholders (16)And We have guarded it (near heaven) from every outcast Shaytan (devil)(17)Except him (devil) who steals the hearing, then he is pursued by a clear flaming fire (18)And We have spread out the earth, and have placed firm mountains in it, and caused all kinds of things to grow in it, in due proportion (19)And in it We have provided means of living, for you and for those whom you provide not (20) The Power of Allah and His Signs in the Heavens and on Earth To those who ponder, and look repeatedly at the dazzling signs and wonders that are to be seen in the creation, Allah mentions His creation of the heavens, with their immense height, and both the fixed and moving heavenly bodies with which He has adorned it. Here, Mujahid and Qatadah said that Buruj [big stars] refers to the heavenly bodies. (…
