سُورَةُ الأَنفَالِ · 8:35

وَمَا كَانَ صَلَاتُهُمْ عِندَ ٱلْبَيْتِ إِلَّا مُكَآءًۭ وَتَصْدِيَةًۭ ۚ فَذُوقُوا۟ ٱلْعَذَابَ بِمَا كُنتُمْ تَكْفُرُونَ

And their prayer at the House was not except whistling and handclapping. So taste the punishment for what you disbelieved.

This is āyah 35 of Sūrat Al-Anfaal (The Spoils of War), the 88th sūrah in the traditional order of revelation. It was revealed in the Medinan period and sits within Juzʾ 9. Medinan verses often address community life, law, and the building of society.

(And their worship at the (holy) House is naught but whistling and hand-clapping�) [8:35]. Abu Isma'il ibn 'Amr al-Naysaburi informed us> Hamzah ibn Shabib al-Ma'mari> 'Ubayd Allah ibn Ibrahim ibn Balawayh> Abu'l-Muthanna Mu'adh ibn al-Muthanna> 'Amr>> his father> Qurrah> 'Atiyyah> Ibn 'Umar who said: �They [people in the pre-Islamic period] used to go round the Ka'bah clapping - and he described how they clapped - and whistling - and he described how they whistled - and they also put their cheeks on the ground. Then this verse was revealed�.

And why should not Allah punish them while they hinder (men) from Al-Masjid Al-Haram, and they are not its guardians? None can be its guardians except those who have Taqwa, but most of them know not (34)Their Salah at the House was nothing but Muka' and Tasdiyah. Therefore taste the punishment because you used to disbelieve (35) The Idolators deserved Allah's Torment after Their Atrocities Allah states that the idolators deserved the torment, but He did not torment them in honor of the Prophet ﷺ residing among them. After Allah allowed the Prophet ﷺ to migrate away from them, He sent His torment upon them on the day of Badr. During that battle, the chief pagans were killed, or captured.
